So that´s why we consider it so important to talk about the Gracia Fiesta from another point of view as well. And that’s because we want to help you to be a responsible tourist. If we want to have this beautiful tradition for many years more we have to know where it comes from this fiesta and which the appropriate behavior is.

First step to be a responsible tourist: learn about the history of this event

The Gracia fiesta is a really colorful and vibrant street festival with origins dating back to the 1860. Gracia was a separate village and only was incorporated into Barcelona City in 1897. The neighborhood and the small streets with orange trees still retains the village ambient. Kind people, romantic terraces, beautiful squares and children playing everywhere.

It has been declared a Traditional Festival of National Interest by the Generalitat of Catalonia and also awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi (St George’s Cross). During that week, many of the Gracia neighborhood’s streets are decorated and filled with activities for all the family including competitions, concerts, sports, workshops, and lots more.

Why we love it so much?

First of all the decoration of the streets are incredible. The decoration is the result of the hard work of the neighbors and it is made from recycled things: drinking straws, bags, egg cartons, bottle, coffee capsules etc. Every street has a main topic like airport, zombie street, avatar street or Amazonas.

Dozens of super and free concerts. Different styles of music, so 3 generation can enjoy the party together. Children and dogs are warmly welcomed.

If you are a real gourmet also you can discover the flavors of the district. A tasty vermuth with olives or wild potatoes are available at every corner. We highly recommend to try these gastro bonbons.

Let´s talk about a little bit about the dark side of the topic. The Gracia Fiesta became really famous between the tourists and outsiders as well, which is totally understandable.

How to be a responsible tourist visiting this popular event?

Please don´t forget that this is fundamentally a festival for neighbors and residents, however the residents of Gracia welcome visitors. But note, that they live there and they have to go to work next day, the life doesn´t stop for them because of the Fiesta. So, respect the neighborhood and be careful not to make noise after 1 am outside the festival spot.

They work really hard with the decoration, so try to preserve it. Don´t touch it, don´t remove it from their place.

Use the trash can to collect bottles and cigarette butts.

As maybe they are going to work next day by bike or have a walk with their dogs, be careful to not smash bottles. The broken glass can cause injures easily.

So, use the district, if you were living there. Be a responsible visitor and we can enjoy this beautiful event for many years to come.

The final countdown: on the 15th of August of 2016 starts the Fiesta of Gracia How to be a responsible tourist?
