We selected 13 of them with the help of the Timeout Barcelona magazine, from the biggest electronic music\u00a0festival to the small but really authentic district\u2019s festivals.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Sonar<\/h2>\n<p>Where: various venues<\/p>\n<p>When: June<\/p>\n<p>Website: www.sonar.es<\/p>\n<p>The three-day International Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art (or S\u00f3nar, as it\u2019s more\u00a0snappily known) remains a must for anyone into electronic music, contemporary urban art and media\u00a0technologies. The event is divided into two distinct parts. S\u00f3nar by Day comprises multimedia art, record\u00a0fairs, conferences, exhibitions and sound labs, while DJs play. Later, S\u00f3nar by Night means a scramble for\u00a0the desperately overcrowded shuttle bus out to the vast hangars of the site in Hospitalet (tip: share a\u00a0cab between four \u2013 it\u2019ll cost you the same), where concerts and DJs are spread over S\u00f3narClub,\u00a0S\u00f3narPark and S\u00f3narPub. There&#8217;s also S\u00f3narKids, with music, workshops and puppet shows on the\u00a0Sunday at the S\u00f3nar by Day site.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>San Joan<\/h2>\n<p>Where: all over Barcelona<\/p>\n<p>When: night of 23 Jun<\/p>\n<p>In the weeks leading up to the feast of St John, the streets become a terrifying war zone of firecrackers\u00a0and cowering dogs. This is mere limbering up for the main event \u2013 on the night of 23 June there are\u00a0bonfires and firework displays all over the city, but especially the beach, running until dawn. Cava is the\u00a0traditional tipple, and piles of coca \u2013 flat, crispy bread topped with candied fruit \u2013 are consumed. The main event is at the port town of Calella de\u00a0Palafrugells, but the Barcelona satellite is no less fun. Performances by groups dressed in stripy shirts,\u00a0with salty sea-dog names such as Peix Fregit (fried fish) and Xarxa (fishing net), are followed by cremat\u00a0(flaming spiced rum) and fireworks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Festival del Grec<\/h2>\n<p>Where: various venues<\/p>\n<p>When: all of July<\/p>\n<p>Tel &amp; website: 93 316 10 00\/http:\/\/grec.bcn.cat\/en\/<\/p>\n<p>Named after the Greek amphitheatre (Teatre Grec) that forms such an integral part of its programming,\u00a0this is the major cultural festival of the year. It brings together dozens of shows from around the world,\u00a0encompassing dance, music, theatre and circus. Increasingly there are performances in English, with\u00a0Catalan surtitles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Sala Montju\u00efc outdoor film festival<\/h2>\n<p>Where: Castell de Montju\u00efc<\/p>\n<p>When: July-Aug<\/p>\n<p>Website: www.salamontjuic.org<\/p>\n<p>A blend of classics and recent independent cinema shown three times a week throughout July and into\u00a0August, transforms the grassy moat of the castle into an outdoor cinema. Bring a picnic and and turn up\u00a0early for the jazz band. A free bus service runs from Espanya metro from 8.30pm to 9.30pm and after.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Festival Cru\u00eflla Barcelona<\/h2>\n<p>Where: Parc del F\u00f2rum<\/p>\n<p>When: 8-10 Jul<\/p>\n<p>Website: www.cruillabarcelona.com<\/p>\n<p>The Cru\u00eflla music festival got its feet wet in nearby Matar\u00f3 as a world music festival, but since moving to\u00a0Barcelona in 2008, it has grown into the blend of styles and cultures that it is today, an eclectic festival\u00a0that books pop and rock bands alongside electronica acts, along with a broad spectrum of R&amp;B, and\u00a0Jamaican and African music.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Festa Major del Raval<\/h2>\n<p>Where: Rambla del Raval<\/p>\n<p>When: mid- to late July<\/p>\n<p>Website: www.bcn.cat<\/p>\n<p>Over three days, entertainment includes giants, a flea market, children\u2019s workshops and free concerts\u00a0on the Rambla del Raval. This particular festa major prides itself on multiculturalism, with music from\u00a0around the world and ethnic food stalls.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Nits d\u2019Estiu CaixaForum<\/h2>\n<p>Where: CaixaForum<\/p>\n<p>When: every Wed in July, Aug<\/p>\n<p>Tel &amp; website: 93 476 86 00\/obrasocial.lacaixa.es<\/p>\n<p>Many museums hold Nits d&#8217;Estiu (Summer Nights) programmes in July and August, but CaixaForum has\u00a0one of the best. All its exhibitions are open until midnight, and there are concerts of varying stripes (\u20ac6;\u00a0\u20ac3 La Caixa clients), films and other activities.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>San Miguel Mas i Mas Festival<\/h2>\n<p>Where: various venues<\/p>\n<p>When: late July &#8211; early Sept<\/p>\n<p>Tel &amp; website: 93 319 17 89\/www.masimas.com<\/p>\n<p>This tasteful music festival stretches over the summer months and has gone from concentrating on Latin\u00a0sounds to providing a little bit of everything. Concerts take place at various venues, including the Palau\u00a0de la M\u00fasica Catalana.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>CCCB Film festival<\/h2>\n<p>Where: CCCB<\/p>\n<p>When: Aug: Tue-Thu 10pm<\/p>\n<p>Tel &amp; website: 93 306 41 00\/www.cccb.org<\/p>\n<p>A series of films are screened in the deckchair-strewn patio of the CCCB. It gets extremely crowded, so\u00a0arrive early for any chance of a seat.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Festa de Sant Roc<\/h2>\n<p>Where: various venues around Pla\u00e7a Nova, Barri G\u00f2tic<\/p>\n<p>When: mid-Aug<\/p>\n<p>Tel &amp; website: 010\/www.bcn.cat<\/p>\n<p>The Festa de Sant Roc, celebrated every year since 1589, is the Barri G\u00f2tic\u2019s street party. It\u2019s hard to\u00a0beat for lovers of Catalan traditions: there are parades with the giants and fat heads, sardana dancing\u00a0and 19th-century street games. The festivities, which centre around the Pla\u00e7a Nova in front of the\u00a0cathedral, conclude with a correfoc and fireworks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Festa Major de Gr\u00e0cia- <strong>Bounce Around Barcelona&#8217;s 1st Choice!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Where: all over Gr\u00e0cia<\/p>\n<p>When: 3rd wk in Aug<\/p>\n<p>Tel &amp; website: 93 459 30 80\/www.festamajordegracia.cat<\/p>\n<p>The main event at Gr\u00e0cia\u2019s extravagant Festa Major is its street competition, where residents transform\u00a0some 25 streets into pirate ships, rainforests and Jurassic landscapes. The festival opens with giants and\u00a0castles in Pla\u00e7a de la Vila de Gr\u00e0cia, and climaxes with a correfoc and a castell de focs (castle of\u00a0fireworks). In between, there are some 600 activities, from concerts to sardanes and bouncy castles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Festa Major de Sants<\/h2>\n<p>Where: all over Sants<\/p>\n<p>When: last wk in Aug<\/p>\n<p>Tel &amp; website: 93 490 62 14\/www.festamajordesants.net<\/p>\n<p>One of the lesser-known neighbourhood festivals, the Festa Major de Sants has a traditional flavour,\u00a0with floral offerings to images of St Bartholomew at the local church and the market.
